The East Meets West Meets North Expo’s festivities continued this weekend with lumberjacks and lumberjills rolling up their sleeves and picking up an axe, as they competed in the Lumberjack Challenge at the First United Church on West St.
The Lumberjack Challenge features teams of 3 men or women going head to head in a variety of challenges, including Cross Cut, Stock Saw, Hot Saw, Buck Saw, Run/Cut/Split, Cookie Stack and Kettle Boil. The events are based around skills developed when logging was a less automated process.
Teams included The Timber Flies, The Wood Wasps, The Curling Woodsmen, Tree-Some and Team Reid Street. The events were emceed by Christa Head, judged by Tara Morgan, and mainly organized by Micheal Moulton of the Model Forest of NL.
Congratulations to The Timber Flies for taking home the $450 grand prize, and to all other teams for winning $400, $200, $150 and $50 respectively. The teams worked hard and really came through on their promise of excitement and exhilarating teamwork. Murray Sheppard also took home $200 for winning the Hot Saw event. Congratulations to all!
Many will agree that regardless of points or scores, the members of team Tree-Some are worth mentioning because they didn’t give up when pitted against a stubborn log during the Run/Cut/Split event.
Kudos to all teams and the enthusiastic crowd for cheering them on.
