Members of the Stockpile Artists Collective were covering Commercial Street in chalk on Sunday afternoon for an event that they call Chalk/Walk, in which they draw (with chalk) on roads and sidewalks around the city.
What makes Commercial Street so interesting on a Sunday afternoon? Stockpile was there to support a fundraiser for Newfoundland’s West Coast Con (NWCC), Corner Brook’s own sci-fi convention taking place in October.

Chalk/Walk was thought up by Stockpile member Shawna Warmington and this is the fourth Chalk/Walk that Stockpile has done (the others took place up the hill in the West Street / Park Street area).
Shawna wasn’t around when I dropped by but Stockpile members Phil Robbins and Jillian Parsons were and they filled me on what was happening as Jill worked on a chalk drawing of R2D2 and Princess Leia.
After talking with Phil and Jillian, Darth Vader and a young jawa wandered over, and Mr. Vader filled me about the sci-fi convention, which will be featured on CornerBrooker.com in October. Vader then proceeded to draw a self portrait of himself…
and then pose smugly:
Stockpile Artists Collective has an exhibition coming up this Sunday, August 29, in McIvers at the Full Tilt Creative Centre. The exact time hasn’t been worked out yet, but check back on Friday for the details in the Weekend Events Radar.
As always, leave thoughts in the comments!
