Campus Connecting with A Rockin’ Time

September 11, 2012

Campus City Connect came to an end on Friday night with A Rockin’ Time — a big, free show at the Pepsi Centre with Goldwithy, Andrew O’Brien and The Searchers, The Navigators, and Sherman Downey and The Silver Lining.

Goldwithy took the stage first, getting the show going for the small, early crowd. It wasn’t totally clear exactly who Goldwithy were until they took the stage. The team of Paynes, including Daniel Payne, Stephanie Payne, Angie Payne, and Jonny Payne were joined by Paul Lockyer and Jessy Matthews.

Since (I believe) this was their first show, if it had have been effectively communicated who Goldwithy were, I think they would have had a lot more people out to see them. I hear this is only the beginning though, so stay tuned!

Andrew O’Brien and The Searchers took the stage next, bringing some of their gorgeous tunes back to Corner Brook.

The crowd was clearly looking for something a little more upbeat, so a few of Andrews last songs got them moving a bit, but things really got going when The Navigators took the stage.

I’m sort-of ashamed to say that I hadn’t seen The Navigators until this show, but wow – it was awesome. Loads of energy and fast paced tunes to get the crowd bouncing.

Finishing up the night, giant balloons and all, were Sherman Downey and The Silver Lining. Photos below!

The music at the show was great, but I think they whole thing lacked a lot of the energy that students were looking for. It also lacked a sense of cohesion that really helps a concert. Sherman Downey and The Silver Lining were on last, but were they the headliners? You didn’t get the sense that the earlier acts were leading up to that. Something to consider for next year.

On that note, this event will be happening again next year! We’ll let you know when details are announced for next year’s show.

Final note: the drive-in movie screening of THE AVENGERS that was scheduled for September 6 at 8pm at the Pepsi Centre has been rescheduled for September 19, same time and same location. Cost is $2 and all are welcome!
