The Titan Games : CBRH Spirit

September 18, 2012

With the cheering that filled the gymnasium at Corner Brook Regional High School this past Wednesday morning, I’m surprised that students at Grenfell did not come to investigate. The school was alive with energy at the first Clash of the Titans competition of the year.

Excited students filed into the darkly lit gym to sit in sections decorated with red, purple, blue, and yellow. For returning level twos and threes, the excitement was in anticipation of what was coming next while level ones were eagerly waiting to find out what on earth was going on. Once the gym was full, our student council president, Maike Van Niekerk, and vice president, Maddi Hulan, took to the stage to give a warm welcome to everyone.

Now that people were getting settled into the school routine, it was time to ignite their enthusiasm by kicking of the year with a pep rally to introduce the house system. For those of you who were not aware, students and staff at CBRH are divided up into four houses, each named after a Titan god: Aphrodite- Goddess of Love, Athena – Goddess of Wisdom, Poseidon – God of the Sea, and Zeus – God of the Sky. Throughout the year there are opportunities to earn house points at spirit days, school activities, and various other events. The winning house at the end of the year usually gets a prize (often a pizza party) and bragging rights. Check out the introductory video created by the student council executive to get an idea of what it’s all about:

The Games began with our annual first inter-house competition: Weiner in a Bottle. The name explains the game. It is hilarious to watch, and requires the greatest concentration to win. We hosted four rounds, one for each grade level and a final face off. Volunteers stepped up on chairs to have a hot dog on a string tied around their waist hanging down to their knees behind them. The goal was to crouch down and aim to get the wiener inside the small opening of a pop bottle.

It may sound strange, but the competition was intense. The minute the first person completed this difficult task, their house exploded in cheers. The “wieners” from each grade level won fifty points for their house, then faced off in a final round worth a whopping one hundred points! Following this, our four Titans competed in a surprise round cheered on by the hundreds of students in their house. Poseidon won, giving them a huge head start to the year.

Not to worry, last Friday the rest of the houses had a chance to catch up in the first House Colours Day: each person that dressed up earned a point for their house. The school was a sea of red, blue, purple, and yellow. It was fantastic to see almost the entire school participating in the competition. T-shirts for each house will be on sale in the next week or so for the next house colours day, which will likely include a four way tug of war for students to test their strength as well as their spirit.

After such a powerful start, there is no doubt in my mind that the students at CBRH will accomplish great things this year. What would you like to see happening at the high school during 2012-2013?
