In The Next Room or the vibrator play

April 2, 2014

Next-Room-13

Opening tonight at Grenfell Theatre, the graduating theatre class, under the direction of Michael Waller, will present Sarah Ruhl’s Pulitzer and Tony Award nominated play ‘In the Next Room, or the vibrator play.’

From a tasteful and humorous perspective, this play deals with the treatment of  ’hysteria’ in women during the Victorian era – then known as an ‘excess of pressure in the womb,’ hysteria caused various psychological symptoms. Treatment was the strategic application of an electrical vibrating device until the woman experienced a ‘paroxysm’ and the symptoms were cured… at least until the next ‘treatment’!

Next Room 5

Doctor Givings is a young physician who boasts a magnificent collection of these vibrating devices, and is considered an expert in the field of hysteria relief. He lives the life of a well-respected man of science… until Mrs Givings, his wife, decides she wants to try the treatment for herself!

Next Room 11

In The Next Room… is a thoughtful comedy about love, science and the struggle to communicate. It is also about vibrators, naturally.

Starring Samantha Hussey, Adrienne King, Jonathan Lewis, Merrick Macneil, Jessy Matthews, Andrew McDonald, and Alanah Whiteway.

Next Room 7

Directed by Michael Waller, with Set Design by Vickie Marston, Lighting Design by Renate Pohl, Costume Design by Kerri Clevett, and Stage Managed by Effie Parsons

Ladies and Gentlemen, join them for the laughs (and perhaps some advice)! This surprisingly touching play will prove to be the most unusual (and thought provoking) date night of the year.

Next Room 8

I had the pleasure (pun intended) of seeing the first half of the play last night and was thoroughly entertained — to imagine a world before electricity is a special treat (I’m writing this on a laptop, after all!), as well as look at science from a different era. Their notions of body and mind seem comical to us now, so just think what our future will think of us!?

Congratulations to the graduating class, and I hope to see you out through the week!

See In The Next Room or the vibrator play Wednesday April 2 through to Saturday April 5, 8pm each night with a special Talkback session Thursday evening after the show. Tickets are available at the Grenfell Campus bookstore or at the box office prior to each performance.
