Crazy about Kefir

Over the past few months I have slowly become increasingly addicted to my favourite new health drink. Kefir is its name – pronounced (kuh-feer) – and it is now a constant addition in my diet. I drink it throughout the day, with meals or just on its own, sometimes with fruit, but mainly just alone in a cup. This new love affair actually began in an unremarkable way, a while back, and it took a few months before it really blossomed. Now it seems there is no turning back.

Food in the City

What do cities have to do with food? Maybe not a lot at first glance, but when you stop and think about it there are actually lots of important ways that municipalities from big to small can contribute to our food system, both negatively and positively.

Food Labeling 101 – Seafood Ecolabelling

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians used to eat LOTS of seafood, mainly cod. We still eat lots of fish compared to other Canadian provinces but the amount of seafood consumed has decreased over the past few generations. Lots of my parents’ friends were fishermen and they always had a steady supply of seafood around.

In many cases there was no need to even buy it because family and friends shared amongst themselves. These days I hardly know any fisherpeople my own age, lots of my friends hardly ever eat fish and it seems to be getting harder and harder to actually find local seafood.

Food Labelling 101 – What’s Fair Trade?

If you know me at all, then you know I have a certain weakness for chocolate – but not just any old kind. It has to be a JustUs! 70% Dark Chocolate bar. On the label, it’s described quite fittingly as ‘intense and deeply satisfying’. So very true…

Food Labelling 101 – What’s Organic?

Buying food is not as easy as it used to be! Labels are everywhere: organic, natural, free range, fair trade, and locally produced are just a few of the common terms among the hundreds of claims that line the shelves.

How can we know for sure what we are buying? Is organic and fair trade worth the extra cost that is usually associated with these labels? I’ve been asked many times what those words really mean, and it definitely takes a little interest and a little time to find out what is behind all those fancy words.

For the love of roots

In many circles, the root vegetable is under appreciated, accused of being boring and unappetizing, its only advantage seen in its ability to store well. Readers, I must admit that for most of my years, I too held this less-than-redeeming view of most root vegetables.

I know where my impression came from. Throughout my entire childhood, my family would eat “Sunday Dinner’ every week. It was the only meal of the week that we called dinner, and we ate it at midday. (It still confuses me a little when people say dinner, when they are referring to the evening meal).

Food for Thought: Meat vs. Grains?

In these first few days of 2012 I’m thinking about the year to come and the one that has just past. There are many big plans for 2012 and I’m wondering where I’ll be sitting this time next year.

The way I eat has been fairly consistent for the past few years, but I recently read a book that has made me re-think some of my food decisions: The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice and Sustainability by Lierre Keith.

Turn your pumpkin into an easy pumpkin pie!

I made pumpkin pie for the first time ever last year, and have been making it every since. I had no idea what to expect at the time, as I had never even really eaten it before. I had never been much of a pie fan growing up, focusing much more closely on the chocolate desserts, brownies, cakes, ice cream… mmmm. Read More
